Competition Readiness

Home | Treatments & Indications | Competition Readiness

Overview

Competition readiness refers to the optimal biological, physical and functional condition required for an athlete to perform at their highest-level during competitions or critical periods of the sporting season. It involves not only physical fitness, but also full recovery from previous physical demands, tissue quality and the body’s capacity to tolerate the upcoming workload.

Managing competition readiness is particularly demanding in sports with congested competition schedules, where athletes are expected to perform repeatedly at a high level with only short recovery periods between events. Under these conditions, rapid recovery between competitions and the preservation of tissue integrity become just as important as athletic training itself.

Characteristics

Competition readiness depends on a delicate biological balance. Excessive training without adequate recovery leads to fatigue, reduced performance and an increased risk of injury, while insufficient training compromises physical fitness. Establishing the appropriate balance and providing the biological support required to maintain it are central to the sports medicine management of competition readiness.

At tissue level, competition readiness is associated with the complete repair of micro-injuries, adequate glycogen stores, effective microcirculation and controlled levels of oxidative stress. Athletes who enter a competition with accumulated micro-injuries, inadequate recovery or high oxidative stress may experience reduced performance and an increased risk of injury.

Scientific Basis

The effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the physiology of competition readiness have been studied primarily in elite athletes. Research has reported improvements in markers of aerobic capacity, reductions in indicators of muscle injury—including creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and myoglobin—and faster recovery among athletes who received hyperbaric oxygen therapy during the competitive season compared with control groups.

From a physiological perspective, improved tissue oxygenation, particularly in endurance athletes, for whom aerobic capacity is critical—appears to optimize both energy production during exercise and the rate of recovery afterwards.

The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

In the management of competition readiness, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is incorporated as an adjunctive tool for recovery and biological optimization, always alongside and in support of the athlete’s primary training and sports medicine programme.

It may be used in two principal contexts. The first is peri-competition recovery, with sessions administered after competitions or intensive training to accelerate recovery and reduce cumulative fatigue. The second is pre-competition preparation, aimed at optimizing tissue oxygenation and minimizing the accumulated burden of micro-injuries before important events.

The frequency and number of sessions depend on the competition schedule and the athlete’s individual needs. During congested periods, two to three sessions per week may provide valuable recovery support.

The decision to incorporate hyperbaric oxygen therapy is always made in collaboration with the sports medicine physician and coach.
