How is hyperbaric oxygen therapy administered?

The treatment is carried out in a specially designed hyperbaric chamber, in accordance with strict safety protocols and under continuous medical supervision.

Each treatment programmed is tailored to the individual patient, based on:

  • their medical history;
  • their diagnosis;
  • their overall state of health.

What Happens During a Session? A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Medical Assessment
Before treatment begins, a detailed medical history is taken and a medical assessment is carried out to ensure that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is both suitable and safe for the patient.

2. Entering the Chamber
The patient enters the chamber and is positioned comfortably, either sitting or lying down, depending on the type of equipment used.

3. Gradual Pressurisation
The pressure inside the chamber increases gradually, allowing the body to adjust smoothly. The patient may feel pressure in the ears, similar to the sensation experienced during an aircraft take-off.

4. Treatment Stage
The patient breathes 100% pure oxygen for a specified period. During this stage, they may relax or read, provided that the equipment allows it.

5. Gradual Depressurization
Before the session ended, the pressure inside the chamber gradually returned to normal atmospheric levels.

The entire procedure is continuously monitored by specially trained staff.

Duration and Number of Sessions

Each session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

The total number of sessions depends on:

  • the medical indication;
  • the severity of the condition;
  • the patient’s response to treatment.

In some cases, 10 to 20 sessions may be required, while other conditions may require a longer course of treatment. The treatment plan is always tailored to the individual patient.

What Does the Patient Feel?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally well tolerated and painless.

During the session, the patient may experience:

  • mild pressure in the ears;
  • a feeling of fullness in the sinuses;
  • a mild sensation of warmth.

These sensations are temporary and usually subside quickly.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Safe?

When performed in a properly equipped medical facility under medical supervision, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is considered safe.

Possible side effects, which are usually mild, may include:

  • ear discomfort caused by changes in pressure;
  • temporary changes in vision;
  • fatigue after the session.

Any contraindications are assessed before treatment begins as part of the medical evaluation.
