The urinary bladder is a muscular organ lined by a highly specialized mucous membrane known as the urothelium, which acts as a barrier between urine and the underlying tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When this GAG layer is disrupted by inflammation, radiation or ischaemia, urine comes into contact with the underlying tissue, causing persistent pain and inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Restoration of this protective layer depends on the biological capacity of the urothelium to renew itself. This process requires adequate oxygenation, a healthy blood supply and active cellular repair mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to the extensive evidence concerning radiation-induced cystitis, clinical reports have examined the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in interstitial cystitis, a painful and difficult-to-treat condition affecting the bladder lining without an identifiable infectious cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The findings have shown reductions in pain, improvements in bladder capacity and relief from urinary frequency in certain groups of patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed mechanism of action centres on restoring mucosal integrity through activation of urothelial cells, improving GAG synthesis and reducing the chronic submucosal inflammation that sustains pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the longer term, neovascularisation improves the blood supply to the bladder wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
